WTF!? PB Hot Dogs

So apparently there is this new craze of peanut butter infused hot dogs. The whole concept to me seems very strange, but I am willing to give these dogs a try. Apparently, the concept was inspired by a 7 year olds love of peanut butter. You can read more about this story in the article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazzete, which I pasted below.
Peanut butter hot dog craze sweeping Du Bois
7-year-old suggests them, people find them yummy

By Cindi LashPittsburgh
Post-GazetteDU BOIS, Pa.
-- Russell Emel sure does like peanut butter.Forget dip for potato chips or ketchup for french fries. Russell demands a dollop of peanut butter on most everything, down to the ice cream for dessert. But when it came to indulging the first-grader's cravings for hot dogs garnished with a gob of Skippy, Russell's mother balked."It's not my thing," said Cyndee Emel, 41, with a grimace. "It kind of made me sick to smear it on the hot dogs for him."Russell persisted. His mother turned to the Internet, posting half-jesting pleas that would spark a community-wide inside joke in this Clearfield County city of 8,000: Could local meat market operator J. LeRoy Palumbo Jr. appease Russell by creating a peanut butter hot dog?Mr. Palumbo, whose culinary experiments in the landmark market his grandfather, Dominic, founded in 1927 have resulted in such treats as jalapeno-cheese hot dogs and wild boar jerky, took up the challenge. He and production manager Tom Weaver produced a 25-pound experimental batch, even though they feared it would be awful. As an unmistakable nutty smell wafted from the smokehouse under Palumbo's Meats of Du Bois, Mr. Palumbo fired off a response to the Web site, announcing, "Come get 'em." That batch sold out in hours. So did the next.Three weeks later, Mr. Palumbo has sold nearly 1,000 pounds of the protein-packed franks and can barely keep them in his cooler after a "Peanut Butter Hot Dogs" sign goes up over his shop. He's talking with a peanut-butter producer about marketing the culinary creation to a wider audience. Some of his neighbors are kicking around the idea of a community festival dedicated to the dogs. And his muse, Russell, 7, is basking in the glory of classmates declaring him a genius as they ended the year at Oklahoma Elementary School with a peanut butter dog luncheon."We were doing it for fun, for the community and for a kid," said Mr. Palumbo, 35, whose shop walls are covered with red, pink and blue ribbons he's won for his sausages, hot dogs and other meat products in state competitions."Who knew it would take off like it has? It's so great that a 7-year-old boy made it happen."Mr. Palumbo said Mrs. Emel posted her initial query about peanut butter hot dogs several months ago after people began discussing unusual food combinations on www.godubois.com."It started kind of a joke, but then lots of regulars on the [message board] were joking around ... about beating each other with peanut butter hot dogs, all kinds of things," he said. "I thought it was a pretty odd combination myself."But after Mrs. Emel kidded him again online, Mr. Palumbo reconsidered. His staff was making hot dogs anyway -- the market sells about 1,200 pounds each week to wholesale and retail customers -- and he likes to try out new tastes. He and Mr. Weaver, 60, who previously worked for Iron City Brewing and Nabisco, "played around" May 19, mixing beef and pork, spices, water and peanut butter until they achieved a consistency that, to their practiced eyes, looked right. They won't discuss their process, combination of ingredients or brand of peanut butter. But they said the trick was to get the thick, oily peanut butter to blend smoothly before stuffing and cooking the franks."To be brutally honest, I thought it would be absolutely horrid," Mr. Palumbo said, laughing. "There was a lot of eye rolling [from Mr. Weaver and other workers.] It was a blind ordeal."Mr. Weaver got the first taste, biting into a dog right out of the smokehouse and shrugging, "Not bad." Mr. Palumbo packaged the dogs, $2.99 for eight, announced their availability on the Web site and figured that would be it.By Monday morning, townspeople clamored for more. On Wednesday, a second, 50-pound batch sold out in hours. One customer bought 15 pounds. Chatter about the dogs continued on godubois.com and on the street as people sampled them, shipped them to out-of-town relatives and debated the merits of chocolate vs. jelly toppings."I'll tell you what, I bought them. I enjoyed [them]" said Patty Klebacha, a clerk in the city treasurer's office. "It's almost like every day somebody has something to say about them. I figured I'd try them before it goes worldwide."The local newspaper caught wind of the demand and published a story. Local radio and television stations followed. The peanut butter company asked for samples. Mr. Palumbo whipped up a radio commercial in which his two daughters discuss "the new buzz:"-- "Angelina and Brad had their baby?"-- "No silly, Dad's new peanut butter hot dogs."Inspired by the success of nearby Punxsutawney in promoting its groundhog, some people in Du Bois have proposed holding a peanut butter hot dog festival to draw tourists.Du Bois Manager Ron Trzyra, who likes hot dogs but would rather leave out the peanut butter, said no one had submitted a formal proposal to hold a festival. But peanut butter hot dogs are on menus for food booths at an upcoming charity race and Community Days next weekend. .As for Russell, he's still enjoying the treat and his celebrity around town. But as he visited with Mr. Palumbo last week, he made his mother and older sisters gag when he wondered aloud how a peanut butter hamburger would taste."It's all been a lot of fun and we appreciate what [Mr. Palumbo] has done," Mrs. Emel said. "I ate one and they're not too bad. Now don't ever ask me to make one the old way again."

Gee Wil-ik-ers!

OMG!!! I just found out that there actually is a National Peanut Festival, gee wilikers it sounds like it would be a swell old time. It is held each fall in honor of the countless men and woman who work hard to grow our peanuts, and of course to celebrate the harvest season of the peanuts. It is held Dothan, Alabama a place where approximately half of the United States peanuts are grown within a hundred mile radius. I wish I could go it sounds like it would be a flippin sweet festival. Some of the festivities include amusement rides, animal acts, live music, agricultural displays, arts & crafts, beauty pageants, food, contests, a 2 hour parade, and not to mention massive amounts of peanuts!!!
****You should definitely check out the website****

A Banned Substance

Why is it that schools all across the United States are banning peanut butter? What exactly is the peanut allergy? Is there a cure? My love for p-butter has led me to learn more about this terrible allergy, which denies so many the gift that is peanut butter.
About 1/2 of 1% of the American population is allergic to peanuts and only 1/10 of this 1% is believed to have a life threatening peanut allergy. I learned that it is not only the consumption of peanuts that can lead to an allergic reaction, but reactions can occur simply if the skin comes into contact with peanuts.
If you are not sure if you are allergic to peanuts or if a friend is experiencing any of these symptoms then it might be an allergic reaction. Symptoms include stomach ache, an itchy skin rash, hives, itchy eyes, a runny nose, tingling tongue or lips, and anaphylactic shock in severe cases.
Peanut butter is a great thing, but for some it can be a mortal enemy. I see now why so many schools are choosing to ban peanuts altogether. It is a sad thing that many children are missing out delicious PB&J sandwiches, but until a cure for this allergy is found then banning must continue.

A Poem Pb Style

When I was a little kid I discovered the brilliant poetry of Shel Silverstein. One of my favorite books was "Falling Up", which was a compilation of a bunch of his poems. There was just something about the way he wrote that I loved. I was searching around on the Internet and one of his poems came up and fittingly it is about peanut butter!!!!!
Peanut-Butter Sandwich
by Shel Silverstein
I’ll sing you a story of a silly young king
Who played with the world at the end of a string,
But he only loved one single thing
--And that was just a peanut-butter sandwich.
His scepter and his royal gowns,
His regal throne and golden crowns
Were brown and sticky from the mounds
And drippings from each peanut-butter sandwich.
His subjects all were silly fools
For he had passed a royal rule
That all that they could learn in school
Was how to make a peanut-butter sandwich.
He would not eat his sovereign steak,
He scorned his soup and kingly cake,
And told his courtly cook to bake
An extra-sticky peanut-butter sandwich.
And then one day he took a bite
And started chewing with delight,
But found his mouth was stuck quite tight
From that last bite of peanut-butter sandwich.
His brother pulled, his sister pried,
The wizard pushed, his mother cried,
“My boy’s committed suicide
From eating his last peanut-butter sandwich!”
The dentist came, and the royal doc.
The royal plumber banged and knocked,
But still those jaws stayed tightly locked.
Oh darn that sticky peanut-butter sandwich!
The carpenter, he tried with pliers,
The telephone man tried with wires,
The firemen, they tried with fire,
But couldn’t melt that peanut-butter sandwich.
With ropes and pulleys, drills and coil,
With steam and lubricating oil
--For twenty years of tears and toil
--They fought that awful peanut-butter sandwich.
Then all his royal subjects came.
They hooked his jaws with grapplin’ chains
And pulled both ways with might and main
Against that stubborn peanut-butter sandwich.
Each man and woman, girl and boy
Put down their ploughs and pots and toys
And pulled until kerack! Oh, joy
--They broke right through that peanut-butter sandwich.
A puff of dust, a screech, a squeak
--The king’s jaw opened with a creak.
And then in voice so faint and weak --
The first words that they heard him speak
Were, “How about a peanut-butter sandwich?”

Another Job for PB
What are you going to do?Cut it off?
Wait, stop! Peanut butter can save the day.
That's right, the marvels of pb are great.
With these simple steps you will have the gum out of your hair in no time at all.
1. Buy smooth p-butter, it works better than crunchy because of the higher concentration of oils.
2. Apply pb to the affected area. Using a tooth brush may be quicker and less messy than using your fingers.
3. Work in the pb with upward and downward strokes.
4. Use a dry towel to pull out the pb and the gum will come it with it.
5. Once all gum is removed remember to shower and wash your hair.
Peanut butter saves the day yet again :)

Natural Peanut Butter
Ok, in the last blog I talked about some of the things that make up regular p-butter. In order for you to choose the PB that is best for your home, you still must learn about the other two types. Today I will discuss Natural peanut butter.
Natural PB: * This PB must be refrigerated and so it can be found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store.
* This PB is made up of 100% peanuts (+ salt).
* It contains no hydrogenated oil. Therefore, the oil will separate from the peanuts and must be stirred back in.
* Contains 12 grams of fat.

Choosing the Right PB for Your Casa
Since peanut butter is widely popular and found in almost every one's home, I thought it would be good to blog about the different choices you have when you buy peanut butter. By doing so, I hope to help you all choose the right PB for your own homes. I have broken down the p-butter into 3 different types: Regular peanut butter, Natural peanut butter, and Peanut butter spreads.Today, I will talk about Regular peanut butter.
Regular PB:
* This type of PB is mostly on the shelves of your local grocery store.
*By law, this PB must contain no artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives and must be made up of 90% or more peanuts.
* Many brands contain hydrogenated oil in order to increase the shelf life and prevent the peanut oils from separating.
* Two tablespoons of this PB usually contains about 16 grams of fat with 3 of those grams being saturated along with 190 calories.
Keep posted for the next blogs on the other two types of peanut butter to come!!!

Salmonella ella ella ella
So, this whole salmonella scare is pretty....well...ummm..its pretty scary. Salmonella is becoming the new Paris Hilton. It just keeps on making the headlines and everyone just wishes it would go away. An article in Huliq News has dubbed 2009 as the year of the peanut butter recall. It does a good job in assessing the current p-butter state and I have posted it below.
http://www.huliq.com/3257/76406/peanut-butter-recall-2009-continues-escalate
Peanut Butter Recall 2009 Continues to Escalate
It's this year's e. coli scare, and it's not getting any better, but rather, it's getting worse. It now seems to have a name, the peanut butter recall of 2009.
Not that anything of this scale has happened in the peanut butter business before. It seemed to begin with the Peanut Corp. of America’s recall of 21 lots of peanut butter from their plant in Blakely, GA on January 13, 2009. Since then the company has expanded its recall to all peanut butter manufactured at the plant since July 1, 2008.
To be clear, this peanut butter does not go directly to consumers, rather it is distributed to other companies who include it in their own products. Such is the reason that Kellogg's recalled its own peanut butter products, crackers and cookies made with the peanut paste, on January 15, 2009.
Over the weekend, McKee Foods Corp. of Collegedale, TN, maker of Little Debbie products issued a voluntary recall of its peanut butter crackers because of possible contamination.
On Monday Kellogg's said the FDA has confirmed that salmonella was found in a single package of its peanut butter crackers.
Also Monday, Midwestern grocer Meijer Inc. said it was recalling two types of crackers and two varieties of ice cream because of the possibility of salmonella contamination. The latest to join peanut butter recall 2009 are Meijer brand Cheese and Peanut Butter and Toasty Peanut Butter sandwich crackers, and Peanut Butter and Jelly and Peanut Butter Cup ice cream.
Other recalls of late: Midwest supermarket chain Hy-Vee Inc. of West Des Moines, IA, Perry’s Ice Cream Co. of Akron, NY, the South Bend Chocolate Co. in Indiana and Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products.
At the same time, some companies, notably Russell Stover Candies Inc., maker of Russell Stover and Whitman’s as well as ConAgra Foods Inc., maker of Peter Pan peanut butter, both said they do not use ingredients from Peanut Corp.
The safest thing, however, if you don't want to be a statistic in the peanut butter recall of 2009: don't eat anything made with peanut butter.
United States of Peanut Butter
Where does peanut butter come from? This is a question that led me to do some detective work on the web, and my findings were a bit nutty. Get it, nutty cause peaNUT butter. Anyways, I learned that runner peanuts are the best peanuts preffered by U.S. farmers for the production of p-butter. These are grown in 3 states; Georgia, Alabama, and Florida and there are over 16,000 peanut farmers in the U.S. alone. Peanuts are not harvested until 120 to 160 days after planting!! Jeez, who knew it was such a long process? The peanuts are then taken to buying stations where they undergo extensive inspection by the Federal-State Inspection Service to determine the value and quality of the load. Then they are sold to the domestic market for about 31¢ a pound. Well, thats peanut butter in a nuttshell! I am so pun-ny today :p
Heavens to Betsy!
With all of this salmonella talk going around I began to become very nervous that I would have to give up my favorite peanut butter snack, REESES PEANUT BUTTER CUPS! I don't know what I would without those little chocolate cups of heaven. However, the Hersheys Company posted an anouncement on its website saying that, "The Hershey Company Does Not Purchase Peanut Butter,Peanuts or Peanut Products from Peanut Corporation of America. All Hershey and Reese's candies are safe to consume." Heavens to Betsty, what a relief!!! Time to go eat some Reeses, chao for now :)
